There is a touching, profoundly naive belief that political regimes possess an unbroken line of communication with reality, preferring brutal truth over comforting fairy tales. We love to imagine supreme leaders sitting in command bunkers, receiving unvarnished sit-reps about military defections and instantly adjusting their strategies. Then, reality pulls back the presidential curtain to reveal a much funnier and darker truth: when a high-profile asset defects to the enemy, no government wants to admit that a lone mechanic smuggled a pistol onto a secure runway and flew a bomber to Shanghai. It is infinitely more comforting for the high command to simply announce that the missing aircraft was gallantly destroyed by enemy artillery fire.

Consider the bizarre 1951 saga of Nationalist Air Force mechanic Shi Dianwen and pilot Dai Zijin. According to official Communist histories, Shi hijacked a B-25 bomber from Taipei, flying it safely to Shanghai’s Jiangwan airfield with Dai forced along for the ride. Meanwhile, back in Taiwan, President Chiang Kai-shek casually informed the public that the aircraft had bravely perished under communist anti-aircraft fire. The myth neatly preserved military honor while neatly concealing the inconvenient reality that security at Songshan Airport was an absolute sieve.

The true human tragedy, however, unfolded in the cockpit. On that fateful morning, Dai Zijin arrived for a routine test flight, completely unaware that mechanic Shi Dianwen was already hiding in the back. At 1,000 feet, violence erupted. Shi shot the assistant engineer and then executed the co-pilot in cold blood, leaving Dai staring down the barrel of a pistol. With no navigation maps and the southeast China coast blanketed in clouds, Dai had to rely on his compass and memory to fly home to Shanghai—a city he had never expected to reenter at gunpoint. Desperate and contemplating suicide, Dai crash-landed the B-25 in a violent, non-standard descent that snapped the front landing gear and plowed the bomber into the mud.

You would assume a forced participant who risked his life would be treated as a hero of the revolution. Instead, Dai was unceremoniously dumped into a dead-end job as a motorcycle instructor for the Shanghai Sports Commission, living out his days in quiet poverty. The regime had no use for a pilot who hadn't defected out of pure ideological zeal.

Human history is fundamentally a museum of states spinning elaborate fictions to cover up institutional incompetence. Deep in our evolutionary wiring, leadership elites excel at narrative self-preservation, preferring comforting delusions over messy facts that threaten the hierarchy's prestige. We are creatures of profound self-deception, wrapping administrative blunders in heroic rhetoric while throwing the innocent pawns under the bus.

The supreme irony of ideological defections is that the heroes of yesterday’s propaganda are always tomorrow’s forgotten janitors. Civilization isn't preserved by official press releases; it survives because everyday people manage to survive the lunatic fiction of their rulers. The next time a government tells you a disaster was caused by enemy fire, check the runway for mechanics with pistols: in the grand theater of power, a fairy tale is always cheaper than admitting a security breach.

一架B-25轟炸機的荒謬航程：當蔣總統遇上「被匪砲擊毀」的遮羞布

人類社會總有一種無可救藥的天真，以為政治政權總是尊重事實，寧可面對殘酷的真相，也不屑編造溫柔的謊言。我們總愛幻想最高領袖坐在指揮部裏，聽取毫無保留的軍情匯報，然後冷靜地調整戰略。直到現實冷酷地掀開政權的內幕，露出那讓人笑不出來的底牌：當一架軍用轟炸機公然在眼皮底下被劫走時，沒有一個政府會老實承認保安漏洞，大家寧可大筆一揮，對外宣稱這架飛機是被敵人的砲火光榮擊毀的。

時間回到一九五一年三月二十七日。國民黨空軍第十大隊的機工長史殿文，悄悄帶著手槍潛入台北松山機場的一架B-25轟炸機中。當天奉命執行試飛任務的飛行員戴自瑾萬萬沒想到，飛機才爬升到一千英尺，後艙就傳來了槍聲。史殿文冷血地擊斃了副駕駛，用黑洞洞的槍口指著戴自瑾，大喊著「老子投奔共產黨去」。由於沒帶地圖又遇上陰雲密布，戴自瑾只好憑著記憶靠羅盤硬生生把飛機開回了上海老家。心灰意冷的他甚至想過同歸於盡，最後以極其危險的非正常程序降落江灣機場，飛機前輪當場折斷，一頭栽進泥裏。

然而，台北的官方說法相當乾脆：蔣總統對外宣稱，該機「被匪砲擊毀」。這招移花接木可謂妙到毫巔，既掩蓋了松山機場安檢形同虛設的難堪，又把一場叛變包裝成了壯烈犧牲。

更有意思的是中共那邊的劇本。按照常理，這場「起義」的功臣戴自瑾既然有高超的飛行技術，理應獲得重用。但怪就怪在，戴自瑾最後只落得去上海市體育運動委員會當了一個機車教練，一生清貧。直到民國八十年經記者調查採訪，這段被歷史塵封的血腥秘辛才浮出水面。原來，體制從來不需要被迫綁架的英雄，它只需要聽話的螺絲釘。

人類歷史本質上就是一部「當權者用一個謊言去掩蓋另一個謊言」的黑色喜劇。我們的基因裏殘存著對權威面子的盲目維護；深植在演化深處的邏輯告訴我們，承擔責任永遠比編造神話來得痛苦，而組織為了維持偉岸的形象，隨時可以把真實的人性碾得粉碎。我們這群擅長自我安慰的動物，總愛把體制的無能包裝成大局為重。

我們這個時代最深刻的諷刺，莫過於大時代的風雲變幻，到頭來往往只是一場各自說謊的鬧劇。文明往往不是毀於炮火，而是死這種「寧可相信荒謬的謊言、也不願正視現實漏洞」的鴕鳥心態。下次當你又聽到甚麼宏大的官方捷報時，想想當年開著B-25在槍口下迫降的戴自瑾：在大歷史的大戲裏，宏大敘事的背後，永遠裝滿了被隨意犧牲的小人物與自欺欺人的遮羞布。
