We like to believe that our societal norms are built on collective wisdom or deep-seated moral consensus. We imagine that when a rule is in place, it’s because the "silent majority" believes in it. But if you dig into the basement of history, you rarely find a moral bedrock. More often, you find a grumpy, loudmouthed octogenarian who didn't want anyone to have any fun.

Consider the classic case of the church parish that collectively banned poker. For years, the cards were hidden, the tension was palpable, and everyone lived in fear of being discovered. The rule was treated as divine law. Then, an inquisitive researcher did the unthinkable: he asked. He discovered that the overwhelming majority of the congregation secretly loved playing poker. They weren't abstaining because they were pious; they were abstaining because they were convinced that everyone else was a poker-hating zealot.

The "church policy" turned out to be nothing more than the neurotic obsession of one particularly vicious, high-decibel grandmother. She had shouted her distaste for cards so loudly and so aggressively that everyone else assumed her personal bugbear was the consensus of the entire community. They were all collectively policing each other on behalf of a ghost they didn't even like.

We are so busy worrying about the social cost of being the first to say "this is ridiculous" that we allow the most obnoxious person to set the rules for the entire species. The next time you see a "sacred" norm that feels performative and hollow, just remember: there is probably no principle behind it—just a dead lady who really hated poker.

This is the dark, cyclical pulse of human history. We are hardwired to mistake charisma for competence and fanaticism for virtue. When we look at the history of these "loyalist" intellectuals, we see a mirror of our own modern obsession with curated narratives. We, too, have our own "Stalins"—whether they be political figures, corporate messiahs, or social movements—whose perfection we dare not question for fear of losing our place in the tribe.

The tragedy of Animal Farm isn't that the animals were fooled; it’s that they wanted to be fooled. Orwell understood that power doesn't just rest on bayonets and secret police; it rests on the desperate, pathetic need of the "educated" to feel that they are on the right side of history. We are all pigs, sheep, or dogs in someone else’s barn, waiting for the next manifesto to tell us that our chains are actually a form of liberation. The only difference is that modern animals have better education and more sophisticated excuses for their servitude.

The metaphor for human societies is disquieting. Highly centralized or totalitarian systems also pursue perfection through uniformity — order through obedience, harmony through self-erasure. Individuals are streamlined to serve the system’s purpose, just as termite genetics are trimmed for collective survival. When creativity and dissent atrophy, the social “genome” contracts too, producing conformity at the cost of vitality.

Ironically, the “lying flat” youth of modern societies echo the same evolutionary fatigue. Faced with rigid hierarchies, over-optimization, and meritocratic exhaustion, they choose non-competition as silent resistance. Like the tailless sperm of termites, they stop running—not from weakness, but from realizing the race no longer leads to freedom.

Perhaps this is evolution’s warning: when the cost of order is the extinction of individuality, both nature and society risk collapsing into sterile stability.

It shows how the behavior, preferences, and attitudes of those in positions of power are often emulated—and even exaggerated—by their subordinates. This isn't just about simple imitation; it's a complex interplay of psychological drivers.


The Social Psychology Behind the Proverb

The theory behind this proverb is rooted in several core social psychological principles:

  1. Conformity and Social Norms: Humans have a strong desire to belong and fit in. When a leader or a person in a high-status position displays certain behaviors or preferences, they are essentially establishing a social norm. Subordinates observe this and conform to it to avoid social disapproval and gain acceptance. This is a form of informational social influence, where people look to others—especially those in authority—for guidance on how to behave correctly. It’s also normative social influence, where people conform to be liked and accepted by the group.
