The Mechanical Circus of Self-Destruction

The Mechanical Circus of Self-Destruction

Human beings are, at their unvarnished biological core, obsession-driven primates trapped in endless tribal posturing. When two factions within the same troop compete for absolute dominance, the imperative to spite the rival clan routinely eclipses the basic drive for collective survival. We like to pretend that industrial warfare is a triumph of rational planning and logistics. In reality, modern organizations are often high-tech madhouses where primitive apes would rather sabotage their own machinery than share a banana with the rival ape across the hallway.

Consider the absurd logistical warfare between the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy during World War II. While the country bled out, the two branches built parallel industrial universes. If the Army used right-hand threaded screws, the Navy insisted on left-hand screws. Engines produced in the same factory received different names and non-interchangeable parts, destroying manufacturing efficiency. When raw materials arrived at port, armed officers literally hijacked shipments from each other.

The madness reached comedic levels when the two services inverted their foundational roles out of spite and paranoia.Distrusting Navy supply ships, the Army engineered its own fleet of transport submarines (Maru-Yu). Not to be outdone, the Navy developed its own amphibious tanks and strictly forbidden the Army from using them. Even when pursuing nuclear capabilities, the Army ran its own atomic project while the Navy funded a separate team. They hoarded scarce uranium from one another, ensuring both experiments stalled until atomic bombs flattened Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This is the darker truth of human nature: when territorial status anxiety takes hold, intelligence evaporates. Bureaucrats and generals do not see the external storm; they only see the ape in the neighboring office. They will build two sub-optimal nuclear programs and two incompatible screws, happily sailing the whole empire into oblivion—just to make sure the rival faction goes down first.
