The Nuns, the Doctors, and the Divine Dividend

The Nuns, the Doctors, and the Divine Dividend

Human beings are, at our biological core, opportunistic primates who excel at wrapping our territorial grease in robes of moral virtue. For centuries, our species discovered that the most bulletproof cloak for resource extraction isn't military armor, but religious piety. When a tribe dresses its hierarchy in white habits and holy vows, society naturally lets its guard down, foolishly assuming that the desire for financial dominance evaporates beneath the altar.

Consider the ongoing comedy surrounding St. Teresa’s Hospital in Hong Kong. The Audit Commission recently cast a skeptical eye on the hospital’s land lease, discovering that the Sisters of Saint Paul de Chartres—a Catholic religious order—had orchestrated a masterclass in corporate tax-evasion architecture. The land was originally granted by the government under a charitable lease stipulating that all profits must be reinvested into expanding medical services for the public.

Instead, the holy order partnered with over eighty prominent doctors to form at least seven private, profit-making corporations embedded directly within the hospital’s basement. These hidden entities operate high-margin medical services like CT scans, oncology, and vision care. By funneled profits out of the non-profit hospital account and into private corporate ledgers, millions in tax-free dividends were quietly distributed to the nuns and the participating doctors.

To a student of human nature and political history, this is not a holy scandal; it is simply classic medieval indulgences updated for the era of corporate accounting.

Throughout history, ruling priesthoods and merchant guilds have always understood that law is merely ink on parchment, easily bypassed through clever structural layers. In medieval Europe, the Church prohibited usury while quietly operating complex foreign exchange loopholes to charge interest anyway. Today, the modern medical-clerical complex does the exact same thing: maintaining a saintly, tax-exempt facade on the upper floors while running a cold, profit-driven capitalist cartel in the basement.

The supreme irony of modern civilization is our persistent surprise when those who claim to serve heaven turn out to be exceptionally skilled at harvesting the riches of Earth. We build systems based on trust and holy reputations, forgetting that under the habit, every ape still wants its share of the bananas.
