The Adults in the Room: When the Bureaucracy Plays God

The Adults in the Room: When the Bureaucracy Plays God

Human beings possess an extraordinary, biologically hardwired capacity for vanity. We build sophisticated administrative states, erect grand legal temples, and convince ourselves that our democratic institutions protect us from the tyrannical impulses of our ancestors. Yet underneath the tailored suits and press briefings, the fundamental software of the human animal remains unchanged: those who taste power will inevitably claim that they alone are fit to rule, viewing the unsophisticated crowd with absolute contempt.

The recent perjury indictments of former top FBI officials Bradley Benavides and Nikki Cole Floris offer a masterclass in this ancient predatory instinct. As leaders of the Bureau's foreign influence unit, these self-appointed custodians of democracy swore under oath that they knew nothing of Hunter Biden’s laptop prior to the 2020 election. The physical paper trail, however, revealed a far dirtier reality. They had spent over a year coordinating its suppression, orchestrating letter-writing campaigns with intelligence elites to dismiss genuine evidence of political corruption as "Russian disinformation."

Floris famously summed up the mindset in a private email: "I am basically running a shadow government inside the FBI right now."

To a cynical student of human behavior and history, this is neither shocking nor unprecedented.

Throughout history, whenever a ruling mandarin class concludes that the populace has made the "wrong" choice, its default response is to bypass the official apparatus. Ancient Rome had its Praetorian Guard, substituting their own grand strategy for the will of the Senate; imperial courts across the East had eunuchs who filtered intelligence to keep weak or unruly emperors in the dark. Modern intelligence bureaucrats rebranded this age-old arrogance as being the "adults in the room." They leaked classified files, manufactured foreign collusion narratives, and manipulated presidential briefings—all to neutralize a leader elected by the very citizens they were sworn to serve.

The ultimate joke of modern democracy is that the greatest threat to a republic rarely comes from foreign invaders at the gates; it comes from un-elected, status-obsessed insiders who believe their personal judgment supersedes the ballot box. They convince themselves they are saving the empire, when in reality, they are merely protecting their own authority.
