The Eternal Channel: Why Border Walls Can’t Outsmart Primate Persistence

The Eternal Channel: Why Border Walls Can’t Outsmart Primate Persistence

Human beings are, at our biological core, relentless migratory apes driven by an ancient, non-negotiable imperative: move toward better foraging grounds, no matter how treacherous the path. For thousands of years, whenever a dominant tribe erected walls or patrolled coasts, desperate outsiders simply adapted, waited, and pushed harder. Modern governments love to pretend that human migration is a logistical problem solved by supply-and-demand economics and criminal deterrence. In reality, no policy can outsmart the stubborn biology of human survival.

Look at the northern coast of France, where nearly 4,000 migrants—mostly young, single men from war-torn regions—are currently crammed into makeshift camps in Calais and Dunkirk, waiting for a gap in the English Channel's defenses.British border officials boast that numbers in the camps have doubled because their crackdowns are working, claiming that making rubber dinghies expensive and smugglers' prison risks higher will render human trafficking "unprofitable."

To a cynical student of history and human behavior, this bureaucrat jargon is pure comedy.

When an individual has traveled thousands of miles across deserts and warzones, taking seven or eight brutal attempts to cross a 21-mile stretch of ocean is not a business calculation; it’s a basic persistence predator instinct. Smugglers simply lower their fees, adjust their margins, and buy cheaper inflatable rafts. The migrants stay in the cold mud because returning to chaos is not an option.

Throughout history, empires from ancient Rome to dynastic China discovered that militarized borders do not eliminate human desperation; they merely turn migration into an arms race between desperate bodies and state machinery. Official claims of intercepted crossings sound impressive during parliamentary hearings, but they ignore the fundamental truth of the human animal: as long as one side of the water offers relative safety and the other offers misery, the apes will keep climbing into the boats.
