The Sovereign Betrayal: When Empires Tear Up Their Own Contracts

The Sovereign Betrayal: When Empires Tear Up Their Own Contracts

Human beings are, at our biological core, self-interested, pact-breaking primates. We build grand illusions of morality, honor, and "indivisible sovereign territory," but the moment a contract becomes inconvenient, the alpha apes tore it up with cold calculation.

Consider the convenient myth that Manchuria was always an inseparable part of China. Historically, it was the ancestral homeland of the Manchus—a private imperial domain kept strictly separate from the "Eighteen Provinces." When the Republic of China was founded, its very legitimacy hinged on a formal legal contract: the Articles of Favorable Treatment of the Qing Royal House, guaranteeing Tsar-like status, property, and residence in the Forbidden City for Emperor Puyi.

Yet, in 1924, General Feng Yuxiang launched a coup, tore up the treaty, and evicted Puyi at gunpoint. By violating its own founding covenant, the Republic forfeited its legal and moral authority over the imperial house and its ancestral lands.

To compound this dishonor, the regime descended into absolute moral bankruptcy four years later. In 1928, Warlord Sun Dianying—a former drug dealer turned Republican general—used "military exercises" as cover to dynamite the Eastern Qing Tombs. His troops looted the treasures of Emperor Qianlong and Empress Dowager Cixi, desecrating their corpses in a display of grotesque greed. When a military regime loots the sacred graves of its predecessors, it abandons all pretense of civilizational legitimacy.

Under such systemic betrayal, Puyi’s search for a new political alternative was not treason; it was an act of survival. When Kanji Ishiwara helped establish Manchukuo, the vision was not mere subjugation, but an attempt to build a new East Asian order under the banner of "Five Races Under One Union"—an Asian melting pot.

The international community quietly acknowledged this nuance. At the Tokyo Trials, neither Puyi nor Ishiwara was convicted of aggression. International jurists implicitly recognized that the creation of Manchukuo sat outside the simple binary of illegal conquest.

History teaches us a brutal truth: authority is not inherited through hollow rhetoric; it is maintained through honor. When a regime breaks its word and loots its ancestors, it shouldn't be surprised when the victims walk away to build a new home.
