Vaccine of Tyranny: How Defending Freedom Built an Empire

Vaccine of Tyranny: How Defending Freedom Built an Empire

When a peaceful band of primates faces a bloodthirsty predator from across the river, it faces a lethal paradox. To survive the onslaught, the loose coalition of independent individuals must surrender its absolute autonomy. It must appoint a warlord, standardize its spears, and march in strict, unquestioning formation. The ape temporarily cures its vulnerability to destruction by taking a controlled dose of tyranny.

This is the central tragedy of human governance, and nowhere is it more evident than in the transformation of the United States. The early American Republic was designed as a fractured, jealous alliance of local polities, akin to the ancient Greek city-states. But history presents a brutal choice: remain a loose, squabbling assembly of free individuals and get swallowed by a centralized empire, or build your own military leviathan to smash the threat.

Just as Athens and Sparta reluctantly unified to repel the Persian war machine, the American states repeatedly handed power to Washington to fend off European aggression, Eurasian totalitarianism, and global adversaries. The local populations injected themselves with the authoritarian vaccine of centralized military command, high national taxes, and executive overreach to survive an existential threat.

The problem with political vaccines, however, is that the virus of despotism is remarkably addictive to those administering it. Washington did not simply pack away its emergency authority once the external threats subsided. Instead, the temporary defense mandate mutated into permanent imperial ambition. The reluctant warlord became a globe-straddling Caesar, transforming a localized republic of free citizens into the very monolithic empire it originally organized to resist.

Despotism is an infectious social virus. To fight an autocracy, open societies end up imitating its methods, building massive bureaucracies, and normalizing systemic coercion. Humanity remains trapped in this endless evolutionary loop: we forge central leviathans to protect our freedom from external predators, only to find that the iron cage we built for our defense has become our permanent home.
