The Romantic Myth of the Biological Glue

The Romantic Myth of the Biological Glue

Human beings are addicted to fairy tales, especially when those fables paint our raw biological drives as noble acts of romantic devotion. When zoologists in the late 1960s popularized the "Pair-Bonding Glue Hypothesis," the public eagerly swallowed the idea whole. The logic seemed so tidy: human infants are so utterly helpless that raising one to self-sufficiency requires an immense long-term investment from both parents. Thus, evolution supposedly invented the intense neurological event of the female orgasm as a "relationship glue"—a blissful chemical reward to keep partners loyal to the hearth, ensuring the fragile offspring survives the cruel wilderness.

It is a heartwarming story, suitable for modern romantic comedies. There is just one problem: the actual empirical data brutally tears it apart.

If female climax were truly designed by natural selection as the glue holding monogamy together, evolutionary logic dictates that monogamous species should exhibit the highest, most reliable frequency of female orgasm. Yet, cross-species comparisons reveal no such pattern. More damning still, human behavioral data shows almost no strong correlation between the frequency of a woman’s orgasm and the long-term stability of her relationship.

If this psychological bribe were so crucial for keeping the tribe’s parents together, evolution had millions of years to perfect the mechanism—making it as effortless and mandatory as the male climax. Instead, natural selection left the female ignition switch notoriously temperamental and misaligned with basic penetrative mechanics.

To the cold-eyed observer of human history and institutional behavior, the popularity of the "glue hypothesis" reveals our desperate need to romanticize raw survival strategies. We hate admitting that nature is a sloppy engineer that leaves redundant code in our DNA. We prefer to believe that our visceral pleasures are part of a grand, divine plan for marital harmony. In reality, the state, the church, and our own romantic delusions love to repackage clumsy biological side-effects as sacred moral duties. Nature doesn't care about your soulmate narrative; it only cares that the species keeps stumbling forward, one messy generation at a time.
