The Twenty-Billion-Dollar Bribe to Keep the Herd Dumb
Every year, Silicon Valley stages a gorgeous theatrical performance about modern values. Apple preaches user privacy, personal sovereignty, and clean digital ethics. Google counters with speeches about open access, democratic information, and organizing the world's collective wisdom. We watch their sleek keynotes, buy their aluminum gadgets, and feel like enlightened citizens of a progressive digital utopia.
Then we look at the ledger and realize it’s all a hilarious extortion racket.
Back in 2018, Google quietly handed Apple an estimated $9 billion just to remain the default search engine on Safari. By the following year, that toll rose to $12 billion, eventually ballooning into a staggering $20 billion annually. That isn't R&D spending; it is protection money. Google pays Apple a quarter of its search ad revenue simply to ensure that when a hairless ape opens an iPhone to look up a symptom or a restaurant, Google's algorithms are the ones harvesting their attention.
To the naive consumer, default settings are a convenience. To a student of evolutionary biology and statecraft, default settings are the ultimate surrender of human agency.
For millions of years, our primate ancestors survived by taking the path of least resistance. Questioning the environment consumes precious glucose; accepting the path paved by the alpha ape saves energy. The modern tech monopoly understands this primal laziness intimately. They know that ninety percent of humanity will never go into their device settings, click three menus deep, and change a default search engine. Choice is an illusion reserved for the few; frictionlessness is the leash used to herd the many.
Throughout history, rulers didn't need to conquer every town by force—they simply controlled the river crossings and collected tribute. Apple built the most lucrative bridge in human history, and Google pays a king’s ransom to stand at the tollbooth. Privacy and open access are lovely slogans for billboard campaigns, but when twenty billion dollars sits on the table, moral principles are the very first thing modern oligarchs toss into the river.
