The Trojan Horse Comes with Seat Warmers

The Trojan Horse Comes with Seat Warmers

Throughout history, empires have fallen not because their soldiers lacked bravery, but because their leaders were hopelessly gullible. The ancient Greeks needed a massive wooden horse to breach the walls of Troy. Today, modern autocratic empires don't even need to build a wooden beast; they simply buy a European car brand, pack the dashboard with HD cameras, and wait for NATO soldiers to rent them.

During Norway's massive "Hovedstad" military exercise, five thousand troops gathered to practice defending critical infrastructure, including the national parliament and Oslo Airport. To move around, the Norwegian Armed Forces rented electric vehicles from Hertz. The punchline? Hertz Norway is owned by Volvo, which is controlled by China’s Geely Group, and the cars deployed were Deepal EVs—manufactured by China's state-owned Changan Automobile.

Predictably, the military exercise turned into an unintended live-stream for a foreign power. These intelligent vehicles quietly filmed soldiers entering top-secret facilities, tracked every coordinate, recorded precise transit times, and even captured high-definition footage of officers punching access codes into security gates. When Norwegian soldiers realized their rental cars were acting like KGB agents, they didn’t stop using them. They simply shrugged and finished the drill because they lacked alternative transport.

This is human behavior at its most delightfully absurd. For decades, Western democracies have sacrificed long-term national security on the altar of short-term cost reduction and corporate convenience. Rulers preach about defensive readiness and strategic sovereignty, yet their procurement departments happily hand over military access codes to foreign-made, internet-connected algorithms just to save a few Kroner.

We like to believe that modern intelligence gathering is about sophisticated satellite networks and rugged double agents. In reality, modern espionage relies on the hairless ape’s addiction to cheap, comfortable gadgets. Why launch a multi-billion-dollar spy satellite when the enemy will gladly rent a Chinese EV, turn on the GPS, type in their passwords, and drive right up to the front door? The tools of war have changed, but the fundamental tragedy of human negligence remains eternal.
