The Herd’s Absurd Geometry: Why the Cornered Ape Bites the Neighbor, Not the Master
When a caged animal is beaten until its mind fractures, it rarely attacks the iron bars, let alone the high rank of the zookeeper. Instead, it turns around and sinks its teeth into the nearest creature trapped in the same cell.
Consider the gruesome news trickling out of Wuhan, China. A lone actor reportedly ordered a battalion of food delivery drivers to various apartments, lured these total strangers inside, locked the doors, and detonated cooking gas. The official machinery will ensure exact casualty counts vanish into the void, but the underlying mechanics of human madness remain unmistakable. From subway stabs to nursery school rampages across East Asia, the pattern repeats with horrifying predictability. And like clockwork, the public commentary section erupts in baffled indignation: “If society wronged you, why target fellow delivery workers instead of government officials, politicians, or billionaires? Why strike down the oppressed instead of the oppressor?”
To ask this is to demonstrate a charming, utterly naive misunderstanding of human evolutionary biology.
The hairless ape does not operate on abstract moral ledger sheets. When an individual’s life collapses under systemic pressure, their rage is not guided by a refined sense of justice; it is driven by a desperate, primitive urge to discharge unbearable pain onto a target they can actually reach. Government officials are wrapped in concrete walls, armed security, and bureaucratic opacity. The delivery driver, on the other hand, is an accessible, vulnerable organism carrying a thermal bag, bound by a contract to knock on your door.
Furthermore, the desperate predator does not want a grand political revolution—it wants immediate, absolute control over another living soul to compensate for its total powerlessness. The state enforces a hierarchy so vast that the isolated individual feels invisible. By orchestrating a localized apocalypse for an innocent proxy, the broken ape briefly seizes the terrifying power of a god over another human life. It is not an attempt to settle a debt with the lord of the manor; it is the violent, frantic flailing of a drowning creature clawing at anyone nearby just to drag another soul into the dark.
