The Asymmetry of Boundaries: Why Empires Invite Their Own Undoing

The Asymmetry of Boundaries: Why Empires Invite Their Own Undoing

Human beings are intensely territorial, hyper-calculating primates. For hundreds of thousands of years, the survival of any tribe depended on a simple, bloody rule: protect the perimeter, or prepare to be absorbed. If you breached an ancient encampment without permission, you were not handed a welcome basket or an invitation to a town hall; you were met with a spear.

Look at the stark contrast in how modern sovereign states manage their borders today. In places like Pakistan, Iran, or North Korea, illegal entry incurs brutal swiftness—years in prison, public floggings, or a bullet. These regimes make no apology for their paranoia. They view boundaries through the primal lens of raw survival, recognizing that a state that cannot enforce its borders ceases to exist in the eyes of its neighbors.

Then examine the affluent, guilt-ridden welfare states of Western Europe and North America. Across Germany, Sweden,Canada, and the UK, illegal entry is frequently met not with swift expulsion, but with an elaborate administrative embrace: free housing, monthly cash stipends, complimentary smartphones, and subsidized healthcare.

To the naive moralist, this asymmetry represents the triumph of humanitarian compassion. To any cold student of statecraft, history, and human behavior, it is a masterclass in civilizational decay.

Throughout history, empires at their peak succumb to a fatal delusion: they believe their wealth is permanent and that moral posturing carries no cost. When a tribe subsidizes non-compliance, it does not earn the gratitude of the outsider—it merely signals to every hungry predator on the savanna that its defenses are soft and its elites are naive. Wealthy welfare states have turned their borders into free buffets, oblivious to the fact that when a system rewards lawbreaking over order,it is actively funding its own internal collapse.

The jungle never changes its laws. A tribe that treats its perimeter like a velvet rope will eventually be overrun by those who still remember how to wield a spear.
