The Myth of Harmony: Why "Small Prosperity" Is Just Organized Greed

The Myth of Harmony: Why "Small Prosperity" Is Just Organized Greed

Humanity loves to sing romantic songs about a lost Golden Age—a mythical era of "Great Harmony" where resources were shared, doors were left unlocked, and nobody cared about property lines. But as the ancient text of the Book of Ritesreminds us, that dream vanished long ago. What replaced it is what we call civilization, or more accurately, "Small Prosperity": an era where the world became private property, handed down through bloodlines, and guarded by trenches and armies.

Strip away the noble terminology of "etiquette," "duty," and "moral order," and you reveal the basic software of the hairless ape. Once we stopped sharing the cave and started owning the land, our instinct shifted from tribal survival to genetic hoarding. We locked up our grain, claimed our immediate family as the only priority, and built thick stone walls to keep neighboring tribes from taking what was ours.

To keep this competitive free-for-all from collapsing into constant chaos, ancient rulers invented "Rites and Righteousness." These were not gifts of divine morality; they were the ultimate operating system for social control. By defining strict rules for kings and subjects, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives, the ruling class established clear boundaries for property and power. They praised courage and wisdom—not out of pure admiration, but because brave apes fight wars and wise apes manage administrative taxes.

Naturally, this system created the very evils it claimed to cure. The moment you mark a boundary line and declare "this is mine," you invent conspiracy, treason, and warfare. The legendary kings celebrated in history were not saintly pacifists; they were master managers of human self-interest. They used law and ritual to punish dissidents and enforce compliance, creating an illusion of order out of raw human paranoia.

We like to pretend that our modern institutions, laws, and borders represent the pinnacle of moral evolution. In truth, we are still living in the age of "Small Prosperity." Our constitutions, patent laws, and military defense budgets are simply sophisticated upgrades to the ancient trench and wall. We haven't conquered human greed or tribalism; we have just learned to regulate them so the kingdom doesn't burn down all at once.
