The Hijacked Lexicon: How the Herd Rewrites Its Own Dictionary
Human beings are intensely territorial primates, but our most vicious battles are rarely fought with sticks and stones. We fight over vocabulary. The hairless ape is a creature driven by status and social signaling, constantly seeking ways to rewrite the rules of the tribe to favor its own faction. When a group wants to capture political power or erase a historical stigma, it rarely invents new sounds from scratch. Instead, it raids the existing dictionary, hijacks a perfectly good, positive word, and forces the rest of the herd to accept the new ransom rate.
Look at how "gay" and "pride" were hijacked. A century ago, "gay" was a harmless adjective describing a bright dress or a cheerful mood. By mid-century, it became a coded subculture whisper, and today, its original meaning has been completely evicted from the language. "Pride," once listed among the seven deadly sins as the ultimate mark of hubris, was deliberately inverted. What began as a defiant counter-shout to social ostracism has, over the last thirty years, been corporate-sponsored, institutionalized, and rebranded into a global calendar event. You no longer just feel pride; you buy tickets to Pride.
This isn't an accident—it is evolutionary tactics applied to linguistics. Inventing a brand-new word like "homophile" or "cisgender" is an uphill battle; the human brain resists clumsy, committee-made neologisms. But hijacking an established word like "love," "family," or "pride" is a psychological coup. It forces the dominant tribe to engage on new terms. It exploits the "euphemism treadmill," discarding dirty labels the moment they accumulate social mud, while weaponizing old insults into badges of honor.
We see this everywhere. The military took "theater"—a place for plays—and turned it into a slaughterhouse. Tech lords took "cloud" and "memory" to mask steel server farms that consume entire rivers of electricity.
Language is not a static museum of truth; it is a battleground of political real estate. Whoever controls the definitions controls the moral high ground, leaving the rest of the herd to nod along, entirely unaware that the words coming out of their mouths no longer belong to them.
