Human beings strut through existence convincing themselves they are masters of their fate, guided by free will,democracy, and economic genius. It is a charming delusion. Strip away the flags and constitutional speeches, and the hairless ape remains what it has always been: an anxious, energy-maximizing primate whose entire civilization is puppeted by soil chemistry, tectonic plates, and water lines.

Take Egypt. Five percent of its desert hosts ninety-five percent of its citizens, all squeezed within twenty kilometers of the Nile. A six-kilometer-wide green ribbon is, for all functional purposes, the entire nation. For millennia, Pharaohs, British colonial governors, and modern military dictators have paraded through Cairo, claiming divine or political mandates. Yet the real dictator has always been a single muddy river. Control the water, control the calories, control the herd.

In India, the 82.5°E line quietly carves the subcontinent. North and west lies the hyper-dense, wheat-eating Indo-Gangetic plain; south and east, the sparser, rice-eating Deccan plateau. Politicians build party platforms on language and religion,but the real divide is calories. Wheat builds one social architecture; rice builds another.

看看埃及。百分之九十五的人口死死擠在距離尼羅河二十公里內的狹長土地上。一條六公里寬的綠色絲帶，本質上就是整個國家。幾千年來，法老、英國殖民總督以及現代的軍事獨裁者在開羅輪番登場，宣稱擁有神授或政治的合法性。但真正的獨裁者始終是那條混濁的大河。掌控了水，就掌控了卡路里，也就掌控了羊群。

在印度，東經 82.5 度線默默撕裂著次大陸。西北側是人口極其稠密、吃小麥的恆河平原；東南側則是地廣人稀、吃大米的大陸高原。政治家靠著語言與宗教拉攏選票，但真正劃分階級的是卡路里。小麥建構了一種社會架構，大米則建構了另一種。
