The Godfather of Splitting: Why Lenin Had to Beg British Radicals to Stop Being Idiots
There is a touching, profoundly naive belief that revolutionary movements are born organized, disciplined, and marching in perfect lockstep. We love to imagine that when Vladimir Lenin seized Petrograd in 1917, radical socialists across Europe instantly snapped to attention like a well-oiled machine. Then, reality pulls back the ideological curtain to reveal a much funnier and darker truth: before Lenin stepped in to herd the cats, the British far-left was just a chaotic collection of tiny, squabbling sects who couldn't agree on what day of the week it was, let alone how to overthrow an empire.
Consider the sheer administrative headache Lenin faced when he looked at the British socialist landscape after the October Revolution. In 1920, through the heavy-handed matchmaking of the Communist International, Moscow forced these fractious, ego-driven British groups into an arranged marriage, creating the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). But getting them into the same room was only half the battle; keeping them from tearing each other apart required serious adult supervision. In his famous 1920 pamphlet, Left-Wing Communism: An Infantile Disorder, Lenin had to practically take British radicals by the ear and school them in basic political pragmatism. He begged them to abandon their precious ideological purism, jump into mainstream bourgeois politics, and even hold their noses long enough to apply for affiliation with the reformist Labour Party just to get their foot in the door.
Yet, before the sectarians drove him completely mad, Lenin’s revolutionary swagger actually managed to spark something genuinely massive outside the tiny radical fringe. The electrifying shock of 1917 galvanized ordinary British workers and trade unionists into launching the famous "Hands Off Russia" campaign. They organized strikes and physically blocked British naval ships from shipping weapons to anti-Bolshevik forces during the Russian Civil War, proving that everyday people could be mobilized when a dramatic narrative captured their ancient tribal imagination.
Human history is fundamentally a museum of master strategists trying to herd ideological purists who would rather lose an election for the sake of their ego than win one through compromise. Deep in our evolutionary wiring, we possess a stubborn tribal instinct that treats minor doctrinal differences as matters of life and death; when left to our own devices, our internal software defaults straight to factional narcissism. We are masters of self-deception, wrapping our deep-seated urge to argue about purity in the grand, sweeping language of historical necessity.
The supreme irony of revolutionary history is that the greatest masterminds of radical change always spend half their time begging their own fanatical followers to stop acting like petulant children. Civilization isn't preserved by ideological purity; it survives because clever tacticians occasionally manage to trick true believers into practical politics. The next time you watch a modern political movement implode over tactical common sense, remember Lenin trying to babysit the British left in 1920: in the grand theater of human nature, a fanatic would rather burn down the house than listen to an adult.
