The Ultimate Irony: When You Sue Uncle Sam to Save WeChat, Only for WeChat to Ban You

If you ever want to witness the exquisite comedy of unintended consequences, forget slapstick comedy and look no further than Silicon Valley.

Back during Donald Trump’s first term, the administration issued an executive order attempting to ban WeChat in the United States. Enter a Chinese-American attorney named Chu, living right in the heart of Silicon Valley. Alongside a coalition of fellow lawyers, Chu sued the U.S. government, arguing successfully that the ban violated constitutional free speech rights. After years of intense legal trench warfare, the Biden administration eventually rescinded the order, legally securing WeChat’s survival on American soil and making Chu a local hero among overseas tech users.

Then came the punchline. Last week, Attorney Chu posted a video to his YouTube channel with a rather stunning plot twist: his own WeChat account had been permanently blocked by Tencent.

It is a masterclass in modern bureaucratic irony. For centuries, human beings have fought epic, noble crusades against external power, storming the Bastilles and filing high-minded lawsuits to defend their liberties from overreaching state authorities. We march, we litigate, we sacrifice our time and money to protect the sacred rights of free communication, imagining ourselves as brave defenders of the open internet.

Yet, our evolutionary wiring makes us blissfully blind to the monsters we invite in through the back door while we are busy fighting the ones at the front gate. Chu spent years wrestling the mighty U.S. federal government to protect a platform's right to exist, only to be effortlessly squashed by an algorithmic censor sitting thousands of miles away in a corporate tower in Shenzhen. The American state respects constitutional friction; an overseas digital conglomerate does not.

History is filled with these dark, beautiful little jokes. We expend immense energy dismantling state censorship, completely oblivious to the fact that corporate fiefdoms and private monopolies have built cages far more efficient than any government ever dreamed of. Chu saved WeChat for America, and WeChat promptly thanked him by canceling him. It turns out that fighting for freedom is exhausting work, but discovering you just preserved your own digital executioner? That is priceless.
