The Economics of Illusion: Why Academia’s Old Guard Still Sells the Ancient Myth of the Golden Fish-Tank

The Economics of Illusion: Why Academia’s Old Guard Still Sells the Ancient Myth of the Golden Fish-Tank

There is a touching, profoundly naive belief that when a university invites a respected economist to address young minds, he will impart wisdom fit for a modern, self-determining world. We love to imagine that elite institutions exist to forge independent intellects capable of navigating complex realities. Then, reality pulls back the lecture hall curtain to reveal a much funnier and darker truth: sometimes, the tenured elite prefer to drag bright young women backward through time, trading academic rigor for the timeless, transactional fantasy of hooking a wealthy benefactor.

Consider the recent storm whipped up at the Chinese University of Hong Kong by Professor Terence Chong, Associate Dean of New Asia College. Addressing students on the "economics of partnership," the esteemed economist offered pearls of wisdom that felt less like modern social science and more like a matchmaking manual from a Qing dynasty concubine market. His core thesis? A high GPA is useless for women because they ultimately need to "fish for a golden turtle" (marry rich); women should avoid pursuing PhDs because their youth is too precious; and a woman's best investment is purely cosmetic. Critics rightly pointed out the regressive stench of these remarks, but the deeper tragedy is the economic cruelty of the trap. By peddling the fantasy of the wealthy catch, intellectual authorities encourage vulnerable young minds to abandon self-sufficiency, gamble their prime years on a speculative illusion, and end up stranded in a lonely, dependent trap of their own making.

Human history is fundamentally a museum of institutional gatekeepers recycling ancient survival strategies disguised as objective truths. Our species is biologically wired to evaluate social status through transactional lenses; deep in our evolutionary instincts, ancestral environments conditioned females to seek resource-rich protectors when autonomy felt too perilous. Yet, wrapping these primitive primate anxieties in the dignified robes of modern economic theory is a masterclass in cynicism. We are creatures of profound self-deception, dressing up patriarchal laziness in the language of rational choice, pretending that advising women to abandon their intellect for a facelift is somehow a sound financial strategy.

The supreme irony of modern education is that universities spend fortunes teaching complex calculus, only to have their senior faculty reduce a woman’s life’s work to an entry-level audition for a rich man’s drawing room. Civilization isn't preserved by regression to gilded dependency; it survives because individuals eventually learn to laugh at the dusty relics who think a degree is just a decorative ribbon. The next time an expert lectures you on the "market value" of your youth, remember the ancient con game hiding behind the lectern: in the grand theater of human nature, anyone telling you to sell your mind for a meal ticket is usually just terrified of what happens when you finally learn to feed yourself.
